Dr. Girish Ganjyal Elected to Washington State Academy of Sciences

The Washington State Academy of Sciences (WSAS) has elected 30 new members in recognition of their exceptional scientific and technical accomplishments, as well as their commitment to supporting the Academy’s mission of providing independent scientific expertise to help inform complex policy decisions across Washington state. Among this year’s newest members is our own Dr. Girish Ganjyal.

“I am truly honored to be elected to the Washington State Academy of Sciences,” Dr. Ganjyal stated. “To be recognized alongside so many distinguished scientists from across Washington State is humbling, and I look forward to contributing to the Academy’s mission of bringing science to the service of our state.”

Dr. Ganjyal was elected for his groundbreaking contributions to food processing research and Extension, advancing crop utilization, product innovation, and market diversification. His work has also provided valuable training for food industry professionals, strengthening both public health and the regional economy.

Since establishing the Food Processing Extension and Research Program at WSU in 2013, Dr. Ganjyal and team have trained over 8,350 food industry professionals across the Pacific Northwest and beyond, conducted over 2,000 process authority evaluations for food companies, and delivered extension programming that has contributed to an estimated economic impact exceeding $120 million for the regional food industry. Dr. Ganjyal has had the honor of mentoring 37 graduate students, 55 undergraduate students, and numerous early-career professionals, many of whom are now making their own contributions to the food industry and academia. His program has been supported by funding from various agencies, including the USDA, NSF, USA Pulses, WTFRC, GFI, and others, totaling over $44 million, with over $8 million directly supporting his program over the years. Dr. Ganjyal has published over 128 peer-reviewed journal articles. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Institute of Food Technologists.

“This recognition reflects the incredible work of my students, collaborators, mentors, and the many food industry professionals I have had the privilege of working with over the years,” Dr. Ganjyal expressed. “It is a testament to the land-grant mission that WSU embodies so well.”

Dr. Ganjyal and the other newly elected members will be formally inducted during the WSAS Annual Induction Ceremony and Innovation Showcase on October 8, 2026, at the Bell Harbor Conference Center in Seattle, Washington.
