Welcome back and to 2020!!  Hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful break.

As you probably remember, Christina Rede has accepted another position in Spokane.  Until her replacement is hired, please send announcements for the newsletter to food.science@wsu.edu.

Upcoming Events and Deadlines

Important dates:

  • WSU starts classes on Monday, January 13.
  • UI starts classes on Wednesday, January 15.
  • Monday, January 20 is Martin Luther King Jr Day/Idaho Human Rights Day.  It is an all university holiday for UI and WSU – no classes and the main offices will be closed.
  • WSU Midterm grades due Wednesday, March 4
  • UI Midterm grades due Monday, March 16
  • WSU & UI Spring Vacation begins Monday, March 16
  • WSU Finals Week Monday, May 4 – Friday, May 8
  • WSU Commencement Saturday, May 9
  • UI Finals Week Monday, May 11 – Friday, May 15
  • UI Commencement Saturday, May 16

Sign up for your UI Laboratory Safety Class. All classes will be one hour and held in the Ag Science Building room 62. Dates and times are as follows.

  • 3:30 – 4:30 pm on Tuesday, Jan. 14
  • 10:30 – 11:30 am on Wednesday, Jan. 15

Apply now to participate in WSU Academic Showcase by January 15, 2020 to present your work in the 2020 poster session. Academic Showcase will be held Thursday, March 26, 2020, at WSU Pullman. Apply on the GPSA Research Exposition website.

The Food Science Club is putting together a Department Recipe Book as a fundraiser for the club. Ideally these would be recipes that you love and also any wonderfully weird things that you love making. Some ideas for sections are cocktails, easy crock pot recipes, sauces, soups, stuffed stuff, food for the soul, healthy yet hearty, cheap and easy, etc. The Food Science Club would really appreciate any and all ideas. This is an open deadline. Please send questions and/or recipes to uiwsufsclub@gmail.com with a subject line like “FS Recipe Book”.

The Student Section

University of Idaho’s Summer Refresh will be held on January 14 from Noon to 5PM in the SUB (formerly Idaho Commons) and TLC. Semester Refresh is for any student who could benefit from practical skill building and a motivation boost leading into the spring semester.  All students are invited. The Department of Food Science and Technology at The Ohio State University will launch the undergraduate Summer Research Scholars Program. This 10-week experience (May 17-July 25) will engage undergraduate students from across the United States in research under the direction of a faculty mentor. Interested students can get more information and access the application page at the Ohio State Food Science Summer Scholarship Program Website. Applications due January 21, 2020.

WSU undergraduates apply for a Faculty Led Ireland trip May 12 – 25, 2020; Exploring the History, Culture and Environment of Ireland. Applications due February 3, 2020 more information can be found on WSU’s International Programs website.

Mark your calendars…

CALS launched a clothing bank for students in Ag Sci room 26. The clothing bank has ‘dress to success’ clothing available for professional events. Donations of clean professional type clothing (any and all sizes) are appreciated. Donations may be dropped off in Ag Sci room 39 (main Ag Econ office), or in office Ag Sci 26.

Preventive Controls for Human Foods Training Registration is now Live! You can register on the Food Processing website for January 21-23, 2020.

Jobs, Internships, and Scholarships

WSU General Scholarship Application is due January 31, 2020.

Apply now for the NCSU Food Science Summer Scholars Program 2020. Applications are due by Sunday, February 2, 2020 to find out more visit NC State Universities website.

Graduate students apply for the 2020 Sylvia Rowe Fellowship Award for Nutrition, Agriculture, Food Safety and communications. Applications are due Friday, February 14, for more information visit the International Food Information website.

Other Announcements

Parking permit information for Students and Faculty traveling between UI and WSU campuses:

  • UI students & faculty: Here is the link for the UI/WSU Reciprocal parking agreement for information regarding parking and permit requirements for UI and WSU.
  • WSU students & faculty: Those traveling to the UI campus must print out a physical copy of your WSU parking permit to be displayed when parking at the UI. To do this sign into your WSU Parking account at https://parking.wsu.edu/. Once signed in click the permits tab, select order permit, scroll to the bottom of the page and select UI Reciprocal, confirm and print. For more information read the WSU/UI Reciprocal parking agreement by following this link https://transportation.wsu.edu/wsu-ui-permits/.
