Upcoming Events and Deadlines
Move-in and CALS Community Ice Cream Extravaganza: August 22 1:00 pm-3:00 pm: Join the Academic Programs Team to welcome students moving into the CALS residence hall and their families. If you are able to help move in (greet families, help load carts, etc), let Elizabeth Bullers know by Tuesday Aug 13. If you aren’t able to help move in, they will also need faculty and staff to greet students on the floor, eat ice cream, and answer any questions they may have.
Mark your calendars for Coffee and Colleges (interaction with the parents of incoming students) in the Ag Biotech Interaction Court August 23 from 9:30 to 11:00 and to greet incoming students in Ag Sci 106 from 2:15-3:15.
Palousafest (Aug 24 5:50-7:30 pm): Club Advisors: If your club did not reserve a table at PalousaFest, 1-2 club members are welcome to join the CALSAC table to represent your club. If you want to be represented but have nobody to cover your table, bring Elizabeth Bullers materials before August 22 and CALSAC can set the materials out on the table.
Dinner with the Dean August 26 5:30-6:30: 1-2 faculty from each department are invited to Dinner with the Dean in the HUB (Dining Center in the Wallace Complex). All CALS students will be invited to join. Please RSVP by August 22 to Elizabeth Bullers.

Current and New Graduate Student Orientation (UI and WSU combined)
· This is mandatory for ALL Graduate Students (current and new).
o Welcome from Dr. Dojin Ryu, Interim Director of Food Science
o Introduce all Graduate Students, Faculty, and Staff
o Review Dept’l procedures (Jane Lawford, Christina Rede, Jodi Anderson and the Representatives from the WSU Johnson Hall Graduate Center, and UI Graduate School)
o Pizza/Salad/drinks will be served
Mandatory Safety Training for all NEW hires or if retraining is needed – Tues., Aug. 27th, 2019 in WSU FSHN Bldg rm #103/155, 6:30pm – 8:15pm. (This will follow the Graduate Orientation.)
· Mandatory for all NEW Graduate students, Faculty, Staff, Research Tech’s, Postdoc’s, and Time-Slip employees.
· Faculty, please forward information to all new hires for your lab. so they know they need to attend. Also, if you need anyone who needs a refresher or you want to send one representative from your lab to pass on new information to your group, please let me know, so we have enough copies.

There will be a Cytometry training session on Friday, September 6 from 9AM-3:30PM in UI LSS 447. The instructor is Evan Davis MLS (ASCP) from Beckman Coulter.
The training will have two parts:
- Morning session: An Introduction to Flow Cytometry including successful panel design and data acquisition.
- Afternoon session: Data Analysis with emphasis on how to use Kaluza, Flow Cytometry Analysis Software.

Save the date! The CAHNRS Fall Festival will be held on September 12 from 4-6PM in Spillman Plaza. In addition to welcoming students back to school, BBQ from Happy Day Catering will be served, and ice cream from Ferdinand’s. Hope to see you there!

The Student Section
UI Students: Here is the link for the UI/WSU Reciprocal parking agreement for information regarding parking and permit requirements for UI and WSU. This should give you the information needed now that WSU is moving to a plate recognition system.
WSU Students and Faculty: Here is the link https://transportation.wsu.edu/wsu-ui-permits/ for the WSU/UI Reciprocal parking agreement. To print a permit that will be valid at UI, you will need to log-in to your WSU parking account using your WSU NetID at parking.wsu.edu. Starting August 12, there will be an icon that you can click to print either a daily permit or a permit for the whole semester that you can display in your window for UI parking.
The WSU Graduate School has launched its online orientation course in Blackboard for new students at all campus locations, replacing our all-day event in past years. Students can log into the course at learn.wsu.edu. Topics include an introduction to life as a WSU Cougar, tips for new graduate students, health insurance and services, details of assistantships and associated tuition waivers, and fun things to do on the WSU campuses. The course is organized into five modules, and students are expected to complete modules 1-4 before arriving on campus. This orientation material will remain available to them for their first semester at WSU, to refer back to as needed.
Registration for Cider & Perry Production – A Foundation is now open. This is a 5 day course and will start on October 21, 2019. Learn the core principles of cider production from WSU fermentation experts and industry practitioners in a five-day professional workshop. In partnership with the Cider Institute of North America, this course is the first in a comprehensive certificate series. Register on Brown Paper Ticket.
Jobs, Internships, and Scholarships
The Ag Sci building elevator will be out of operation this summer and fall semester as they will be replacing the elevator. (Best case scenario: the new one will be up and running by labor day.) We are working with facilities to make any ADA accommodations for our faculty and staff who work on floors 1-3. If you have someone who may need to move to the ground floor due to ADA needs, please send their names to Mary Ellen Martin. Here is an updated schedule for the Ag Science elevator project:
- 7/29: Existing elevator is shut down and removed by Shindler Elevator Co.
- 8/5 – 9/27: Installation of new elevator and upgrades and expansion to equipment room. Mangum’s will require storage space at the loading dock and a shipping container for elevator parts.
