UI faculty, The Food Science and Technology Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is conducting a survey collecting data on graduate assistantship stipend amounts offered at peer institutions. Please fill out a brief survey (3-5 minutes) at Survey Monkey by February 1, 2019.
Nominees for The Graduate School Recruitment Scholarship for STEM Disciplines are due on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 to Alanna Ellis (email@example.com) in the Academic Programs Office. Full descriptions and eligibility requirements for each award can be found on the Graduate School’s Website.
The 3rd Annual Plant Science Symposium will be held on Friday, March 22, 2019 at Washington State University. The event will be held in the WSU Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center. Registration is FREE! and includes snacks, lunch, and drink tickets for a social mixer. There will be a poster session and prizes for the best posters. There is also an opportunity for graduate students and postdocs to apply to present a short talk. Students (BS, MS. PHD’s) interested in confectionery and snacks, apply to the Professional Manufacturing Confectioners Association (PCMA) program. It was developed in an effort to reach out to the next generation of confectionery and snack personnel and demonstrate how “sweet” it is to be part of these exciting industries. The UI Semester Refresh conference will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 from 12-5PM in the Idaho Commons and TLC. Semester Refresh is for any student who could benefit from practical skill building and a motivation boost leading into the spring semester. All students are invited. The WSU Undergraduate Research Award application is now open. Students may choose between three awards to apply for to support mentored research in the 2019 -2020 school year. Applications are due by February 15, for more information check out the WSU Insider.
If you are interested in practicing for the IFTSA Food Science College Bowl Competition that is held mid-March 2019, enroll in FS 499 section 2, Special Problems, 1 cr., pass/fail graded, time/location TDB. It just lasts until end of March. Once students are enrolled, a time will be picked that hopefully fits everyone’s schedule. We need approximately 7 ugrad/grads and for undergrad, this can be used towards your elective credits. It would be just one-hour long. This a knowledge bowl competition you are preparing for, so if you like food-related trivia and food facts, this could be for you. Since 1985, the IFTSA College Bowl Competition has tested the knowledge of student teams from across the United States in the areas of food science and technology, history of foods and food processing, food law, and general IFT/food-related trivia. WSU and UI as a joint team have been competitive in College Bowl for almost a decade. The College Bowl is designed to:
• facilitate interaction among students from different universities
• stimulate the students’ desire to accumulate and retain knowledge
• provide a forum for students to engage in friendly competition
Teams from IFT Student Chapters in eight geographical areas of the Student Association compete in area competitions prior to the IFT Annual Meeting. The winning teams from the eight areas then compete in a final competition at the Annual Meeting. All finalists receive a $1000 travel grant. The national champion earns a $1000 award, and the runner-up a $750 award.

UI Students, the University of Idaho has established an Institutional Agreement with Kaplan to allow students the opportunity to complete live, in-person GRE and MCAT preparation courses at a reduced rate. The Kaplan GRE Test Preparation Course survey and the Kaplan Test Preparation Course survey are open if interested in these opportunities.
The Foundation for Food and Agriculture has a prestigious fellowship program known as the FFAR Fellows. You can apply for their upcoming 2019-2022 cohort by February 15, 2018 for the Stipend + Professional Development Fellow ship and April 15, 2018 for the Professional Development Fellowship. The Basic Plus Cheese Making Short Course will be held on February 5-7, 2019 at Mount Vernon, Washington. Head to the Creamery’s Registration Page for more information.
The Better Process Control School will be a 4 day Full Course from February 5-8, 2018 and a 2 day Acidified Foods course from February 5-6, 2019. Courses run from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm every day. Check-in starts at 7:45 am the first day. Course is limited to 40 people. More information can be found on the Washington State University Food Processing Extension’s website.
