Accomplishments

Congratulations to Greg Moller and the Clean Water Machine team for receiving an award from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. This award will help support Moller and the Clean Water Machine team continue their research on developing a new technology that purifies wastewater and helps stop toxic algae blooms. UI student, deadlines are approaching for distinguished scholarship applications. Please review the list of distinguished scholarships that are due soon after winter break (January 2019 – February 2019). University of Idaho students have been successful in many of these scholarship competitions. See University of Idaho’s news website for more information.

UI faculty, The Food Science and Technology Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is conducting a survey collecting data on graduate assistantship stipend amounts offered at peer institutions. Please fill out a brief survey (3-5 minutes) at Survey Monkey by February 1, 2019.

Nominees for The Graduate School Recruitment Scholarship for STEM Disciplines are due on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 to Alanna Ellis (acellis@wsu.edu) in the Academic Programs Office. Full descriptions and eligibility requirements for each award can be found on the Graduate School’s Website.

The 3rd Annual Plant Science Symposium will be held on Friday, March 22, 2019 at Washington State University. The event will be held in the WSU Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center. Registration is FREE! and includes snacks, lunch, and drink tickets for a social mixer. There will be a poster session and prizes for the best posters. There is also an opportunity for graduate students and postdocs to apply to present a short talk. Instructions for general registration as well as poster abstract applications are available at the [plantsciencesymposium.wsu.edu]Plant Science Symposium website.

Students (BS, MS. PHD’s) interested in confectionery and snacks, apply to the Professional Manufacturing Confectioners Association (PCMA) program.  It was developed in an effort to reach out to the next generation of confectionery and snack personnel and demonstrate how “sweet” it is to be part of these exciting industries.  For more information, head to the PMCA Student Outreach Program Website.

The Student Section

The submission deadline for Academic Showcase poster session is on Wednesday, January 16, 2019. This year’s poster session will be held Thursday, March 28 on the WSU Pullman campus. To participate, submit an abstract of your work (250 words or less).

Applications for the GPSA Research Expo and the Academic Showcase are due January 16, 2019. This is a great opportunity for graduate students to network and present their research.

The WSU Undergraduate Research Award application is now open. Students may choose between three awards to apply for to support mentored research in the 2019 -2020 school year. Applications are due by February 15, for more information check out the WSU Insider.

University of Idaho graduate students and postdocs are encouraged to join the new UIdaho Graduate Community Facebook page to receive updates on upcoming events and more!

UI Students, the University of Idaho has established an Institutional Agreement with Kaplan to allow students the opportunity to complete live, in-person GRE and MCAT preparation courses at a reduced rate. The Kaplan GRE Test Preparation Course survey and the Kaplan Test Preparation Course survey are open if interested in these opportunities.

The Foundation for Food and Agriculture has a prestigious fellowship program known as the FFAR Fellows. You can apply for their upcoming 2019-2022 cohort by February 15, 2018 for the Stipend + Professional Development Fellow ship and April 15, 2018 for the Professional Development Fellowship. Extension Events

The Basic Plus Cheese Making Short Course will be held on February 5-7, 2019 at Mount Vernon, Washington. Head to the Creamery’s Registration Page for more information.

The Better Process Control School will be a 4 day Full Course from February 5-8, 2018 and a 2 day Acidified Foods course from February 5-6, 2019. Courses run from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm every day. Check-in starts at 7:45 am the first day. Course is limited to 40 people. More information can be found on the Washington State University Food Processing Extension’s website.

The FSPCA Preventive Controls for Human Foods (February 15-17, 2019) online registration is now open. This 2.5 day course has been designed by the Food Safety Preventative Controls Alliance (FSPCA) in collaboration with the FDA. It is a course recognized by FDA at present in meeting their requirements. 

The 33rd Advanced Cheese Making Short Course will be held on February 26-28, 2019 in Pullman, Washington. Head to the Creamery’s Registration Page for more information.

Jobs, Internships, and Scholarships

The School of Food Science at Washington State University in Pullman, WA invites applications for a permanent full time 12 month appointment as Creamery Assistant Manager. The Creamery Assistant Manager reports to the Creamery Manager and is responsible for the development and execution of the three divisions of the WSU Creamery, namely retail sales (Ferdinand’s), direct marketing and production including providing support, oversight, and fiscal management. The non-profit Partnership for Food Safety Education is awarding scholarships to 12 full-time graduate or undergraduate students enrolled at a US-based university to attend From Consumers to Chefs: Food Safety Education Matters – the 2019 consumer food safety education conference, March 6-8, 2019 in Orlando, FL. Submission deadline is January 14, 2019. For more information, head to the Consumer Food Safety Education Conference’s website.

The annual WSU General Scholarship application is due January 31. The general application will automatically apply you for over 700 different awards; don’t miss this opportunity to ease your financial burden in the 2019-2020 school year.
