PULLMAN, WA – Teams of students from six universities will come together at the School of Food Science on March 29, 2014 to compete in a food science quiz bowl competition. The event will coincide with the annual Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA) Pacific West area meeting.
The Food Science College Bowl will be held at the Washington State University (WSU) Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) building in room T101 starting at 3:00 pm. Two teams will be quizzed at a time on their food science knowledge in a “Jeopardy” style trivia competition. The participating Pacific West region schools are: UI/WSU School of Food Science, Oregon State University, University of California Davis, San Jose State, Fresno State, and the University of British Columbia. The team that takes first place will have the opportunity to compete in the national competition at the 2014 Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Annual Meeting in New Orleans in June.
Along with the College Bowl competition, the IFTSA members will enjoy social activities where they will network with fellow food science students as well as industry professionals who come as judges, moderators or spectators. In addition to College Bowl, other activities planned are IFTSA Chapter Presentations, guest speakers from the food industry, a product development cookie competition, and a closing banquet. All faculty, staff, alumni and food industry representatives are welcome to attend the College Bowl competition and register to attend the closing banquet >> more here.
“As a whole, this event provides a great opportunity for students to broaden their network and get to know people they will likely work with in their future food industry careers,” said Allison Baker, IFTSA Pacific West Area Representative and WSU School of Food Science graduate student, who is coordinating the event. “The competition encourages participants and spectators alike to get excited about food science.”
Since 1985, the IFTSA College Bowl Competition has tested the knowledge of student teams from across the United States in the areas of food science and technology, history of foods and food processing, food law, and general IFT/food-related trivia.
The College Bowl is designed to facilitate interaction among students from different universities, stimulate the students’ desire to accumulate and retain knowledge, and provide a forum for students to engage in friendly competition.
