Nineteen students from the School of Food Science took their annual “Portland Trip” in January to tour a variety of food companies in the Portland, OR area. Our future food scientists had the opportunity to tour and learn more about 13 different companies.
On their way toward Portland on Thursday, January 9th, a portion of the group stopped in Hood River at Ryan’s Juice Company (100% juices) and Turtle Island Foods (manufacturers of the product Tofurkey). After these initial stops, the full group of 19 food science students met up at their hotel in Portland.
The students split up into two groups on Friday: one group visited the Wheat Marketing Center, Harry’s Fresh Foods, and Moonbrine Pickles. Group two visited Dave’s Killer Bread, Bridgetown Natural Foods (all-natural and organic whole grain products), Hot Lips Pizza and Soda and Happy Campers Gluten Free Bread. Together the students met to visit Nabisco and enjoy samples of Chips Ahoy and Oreo cookies as well as Chicken in a Biskit, Ritz and Saltine crackers.
Saturday was comprised of two beverage company tours: Deschutes Brewery and Bull Run Distilling Co.
Overall, the trip was positive and enlightening with only one “hiccup” when motorpool vehicle needed new tires. Socially it was a great opportunity for students to get to know one another outside of an academic environment. With the diversity of the different companies from one that’s just a step up from start up business to major manufacturers, the students got a very strong cross-sectional representation of food companies in the industry.
